Emotional abuse is normally to be found in the relationship between
a carer and a child rather that in a specific event or pattern of events.
It involves things such
as:
- Persistent criticism, sarcasm, hostility or blame directed at a child;
- conditional parenting of a child in which the level or care showen to a child is made contingent upon
his/her behaviour or actions;
- emotional unavailabiolity by the child`s parent/carer;
- unrealistic or inappropriate expectations of the child`s capacity to understand something or to behave
and control him/herself in a certain way;
- under-or over protectiveness of the child;
- failure to show interest in or provide age-appropriate opportunities for the child`s intellectual and emotional
development;
- use of unreasonable or overly harsh disciplinary measures;
- exposure to domestic violence.
